About Pidurutalagala
Pidurutalagala — also called Mount Pedro — is the highest mountain in Sri Lanka at 2,524 m, rising directly above the tea town of Nuwara Eliya. It is unusual among country highpoints: the summit is an active military communications site, so the top is closed to the public and the tarred access road is checkpoint-controlled. Most visitors reach the lower viewpoint, then hike Sri Lanka's genuinely open high peaks instead.

Why the highest point is off limits
Pidurutalagala carries the country's main television and radio transmitters plus military communications equipment, and it has been a controlled zone for decades. A sealed road runs to the top from Nuwara Eliya, but a guarded checkpoint sits partway up and photography beyond it is restricted. Local tour drivers sometimes offer to arrange access; in practice permission is rarely granted, and highpointers usually settle for the lower Mount Pedro viewpoint and the trail through the surrounding cloud forest.
