About Golem Korab
Mount Korab — Maja e Korabit in Albanian and Golem Korab in Macedonian — rises on the Albania–North Macedonia border. Sources disagree on its height: Peakbagger still carries the old Yugoslav-era survey figure of 2,753 m, while the modern resurvey — used by North Macedonia, by countryhighpoints.com (9,068 ft = 2,763.9 m), and by PeakVisor and Wikidata — gives 2,764 m. Albanian sources sometimes quote 2,754 m. We list 2,764 m as the best-supported figure. Either way it is the highest mountain in both countries, so one summit completes two national highpoints.
The usual North Macedonian route begins near the Strezimir border-police post in Mavrovo National Park. It is a long, non-technical mountain walk of roughly 9 km each way with about 1,300 m of ascent, crossing open pasture and broad ridges before the final climb. Carry identification and check the current border-zone access requirements before setting out.
From Albania, walkers normally approach from Radomirë through remote valleys and alpine meadows. The summit is an international boundary rather than an official border crossing, so climbers should return to the country from which they started unless cross-border arrangements have been made in advance.
Late May to October is the normal hiking season, with the most dependable snow-free conditions in summer and early autumn. Winter turns the massif into a serious mountaineering objective with deep snow, avalanche terrain and few marked routes.
